It seems to me through my own reading of hundreds of myths that there are set forth within most mythology three major types of Deities:
1. Great Ancestral Matrons and Patrons- The Ori, Disir, Old ones ect.
2.Personifications of heavenly bodies- The Earth, The Sun, the Moon ect.
3. Entities that decend to Earth from above on or within some sort of vehicle
Further more it is a theme through many cultural myths that an old set of Deity wars and is ultimateley replaced by a new set of "sky" Deity- The Titans vs the Olympians/ The Vanir vs the Aesir/The Formorians vs the Tuatha De Dannan ect.
